Herbal Cat Litter Saves the Earth and Your Nose

herbal cat litter

We’ve recently discussed scooping litter and it’s one of the least favorable aspects of cat parenting. Besides hiring out someone to do it, you’re stuck with the chore. Make the chore happen less by buying herbal cat litter. The special odor absorbing litter is made from corn cob particles that clump when used. It is lightweight and lasts 3x as long as regular clay clumping litter. Just imagine scooping 3 times less often! Sweet!

The herbal cat litter can be purchased at Cat Claws for $31.90 per 15 pound bag. Discounts given to multiple bag orders.

Eco-Friendly Pet Gate

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Made from recycled composite resin, this folding pet gate looks good as well as doing the job. It is easy to put up, as it is freestanding, is held in place by its own weight and will fit a variety of openings. It is weatherproof so can be used outside as well as inside.

I don’t know how well it would hold up to a determined escapologist, but if all you need is a barrier to keep your dog in or out of a room then this would do the job. It comes in dark red, earth brown or evergreen and is available in two heights.

Natural Pheromone Collar For Calming Dogs and Cats

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Behavioral problems in pets are often caused by anxiety or stress. If your cat starts to urinate on the carpet he may be upset about a change in his routine. If your dog suffers from separation anxiety he may chew and destroy the furniture when you are out. While training is the answer to many behavioral issues, if it’s a case of anxiety causing changes in behavior, then finding a way to calm your pet may be all that is needed.

This pheromone collar mimics the pheromone produced by the mother to calm her pups or kittens.Your pet can wear the collar all the time or just when a stressful situation is anticipated. Whether it works or not depends on the animal and on the reasons for the behavior, but the collar is fairly cheap, lasts for a month and is worth a try if you think your pet just needs a little soothing to deal with the stress in his or her life!

Eco-friendly Pet Carrier

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

If you’re looking for a simple, inexpensive pet carrier for occasional trips to the vet, this one from Bergen could be all you need. It’s made from 60% recycled materials, so is much better for the environment than those big plastic boxes. It is also collapsible, so that you can easily store it away when not in use.

It fits pets up to 10lbs in weight, so is probably better for cats than dogs and closes them in completely so they feel secure.

You wouldn’t really choose this one for its looks, a cardboard box is what comes to mind, but if you want something sturdy, cheap and functional that isn’t using up the earth’s resources you might well go for this one.

Organic Catnip Mice

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

Sometimes the simplest toys are best for cats. Organic catnip mice in attractive recycled fabric with a tempting string tail can keep your kitty entertained for hours, as she bites, kicks, grabs and tosses it around.

The perfect gift for an eco-friendly cat lover, these mice are hand-made in the US from recycled fabric. They are six inches long so big enough for a cat to really get to grips with. They are not that cheap if you are buying for several pets, but if you are happy to pay for chemical free organic catnip and handmade style, then well worth it.

Non-Toxic Odor Eliminator For Pets

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

The smell of wet dogs isn’t most people’s favorite perfume, but chemical air fresheners are often even worse. If you are looking for a natural way of getting rid of pet odors in the home, these Fresh Wave gel crystals do seem to work. They neutralize odors rather than covering them up with another strong scent.

All you do is open up the jar and leave it open in the room and it will gradually get rid of bad smells. The jar lasts for a few weeks of constant use before it needs replacing.

Eco conscious pet owners will like the fact that the gel is biodegradable and the packaging materials are recycled. Plus the gel is completely non-toxic. The only downside is that this product isn’t cheap, but probably cheaper than washing your pooches in sweet smelling shampoo every day!

Costs $18.95 from Amazon.com

Soft Hemp Cat Collars

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

This Silly Kitty range of natural hemp cat collars is great for pets with sensitive skin or who just get irritated by other collars. The hemp is strong but very soft and wears well. The style is the safety breakaway collar design and is easy to put on, staying on fairly well, though determined kitties can get them off!

The best thing about these hemp collars is that cats find them comfortable and don’t have problems with them rubbing their skin or wanting to scratch the whole time. Plus they come in a great range of colors. Oh and of course hemp is a really eco-friendly choice with a low environmental impact, so these collars are good for your pet and good for the planet!

Natural Pill Pockets For Cats

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Any cat owner will identify with the well-worn story about giving a cat a pill and ending up in ER. It’s never easy to fool a cat into taking a pill, but these tasty pill pockets seem to work with more than half the cat population. They are soft and taste of a delicious treat.

All you do is hide the pill in the hole and pinch together the pocket. The cat thinks she’s getting a treat and swallows without noticing the pill, unless she is very smart and picky!

The pill pockets also contain probiotics and vitamins C and E so are helping boost the immune system along with the pill. The 1.6oz bag contains 45 pills and comes in either chicken or salmon flavor.

Costs  $9.95 from Jake’s Dog House
