If the approx. 40 cents a poop doesn’t scare you off - you are getting a primo solution to an important eco-pet issue. Another area the scooperbox claims to excel over the plastic bag is by scooping it with the cardboard you can get better leverage over a variety of surfaces, and eliminates the gross, squishy touch of the messier ones.

Their website is currently offering the leash clip for the box for free if you buy the scooperbox package now– worth $5. Great Green Pets has previous dogpoop article, what’s the green solution for getting rid of dog poop that discusses a variety of approaches and solutions.

Hemp Small Pet Carrier

small pet Hemp Carrier
Hemp Pet Carrier for small pets from Sunnica.com $69.99

Made from 55% Hemp and 45% Cotton. Website doesn’t give dimensions (looks like a over-site) but judging from the the size of the carrier compared to the grass in the photo I would guess it could only handle a very small dog and medium to small cat. They also have a seagrass vent on the side, a shoulder strap, and washable fleece padding on the bottom along with a reinforced floor.

Thinking of some good Karma for my Dogma

Karma Organic Dog Food
Karma Organic Dog Food USDA 95% Certified Organic Dog Food

I have been increasingly worried about mainstream dog food. I have tried off and on to switch my dog to an healthier organic brand from the Eukanuba that she has been eating since a puppy. But every time we try, no matter how long we gradually introduce (typically a month or so of very gradually increasing the percentage) she will start having some rather nasty digestive side effects I won’t get into. I am thinking of giving it another chance with Karma Organic Dog food as it looks so promising and I am tired of giving my money to the big corporate dog food companies that are more concerned about their bottom line than the safety of our pets.

Hopefully I am not just being suckered into a marketing scam but I am impressed that Karma seems to use such high quality ingredients, with No artificial preservatives, colors or additives. They also state ” All our foods are free from chemical additives of any kind, including preservatives such as Ethoxyquin and BHA/BHT, which are frequently found in pet foods but are banned from human use in many countries.” They claim to strive to make the healthiest dog food in the world, providing USDA-inspected chicken, turkey and lamb, whole grain rice and barley, fresh fruits and vegetables.

If anyone uses this brand or has any suggestions about another brand that might even be better I would be curious to hear from you.

Great Source for Organic Parrot Foods

Organic Parrot food
Good Stuff Birdie Bread $9.95/12 ounce bag (larger sizes available) at www.parrotsontheporch.com

Parrots on the Porch.com
says they are working hard to get organic parrot food into the mainstream. According to the website they use all organic ingredients. Parrots are very sensitive to pesticides, dyes and preservatives. They can have digestive, neurological and mood problems from foods that contain too many additives.

They also go on to say that they make their foods in frequent batches, to maintain freshness, sometimes taking custom orders. They also wrote us to say that they get many of their grains and vegetables locally, to support their area’s organic farmers.

Sadly, my wife has no tolerance for loud squawking at any time of the day so I will forever be parrot-less. If you are lucky enough to have a parrot living with you, this is one site you should check out.

Save birds from your cat’s natural instincts

CatBib
CatBib - helps prevent Bird Kills from your cat $8.95 from CatGoods.com

There are an estimated 60 million cats in the US and its probably safe to say that a significant percentage, perhaps a majority, are let out by their owners to prowl outside. Many cat owners probably think this is only natural and to prevent your cat from going outside would be inhumane. The problem is with all of these cats hunting birds and other small prey, they tip the natural ecological balance in favor of cats. House cats are probably the leading killer of birds, who are also threatened by their habitats being destroyed by developments and the like.

The Audubon Society states that “keeping cats indoors ensures that birds outdoors stay safe. Cats, too, benefit, as they’ll be exposed to less risk of disease, parasites, predation, poison, and accidents. According the to American Humane Society, cats that are allowed to roam outside live an average of 3 years while indoor cats typically reach an average age of 15 years.”

Keeping your cat indoors may be the best answer but old habits die hard for many and another solution is the CatBib from CatGoods.com Their website claims it in no way bothers or interferes with the cat’s activities outdoors and is completely safe. The bib only interferes with the cats ability to catch birds. While that may piss off the cat - you will feel better knowing you aren’t helping contributing to bird slaughters.
They have a page of many testimonials saying how well it works.
Here a good link for more information on this issue from an article in the Guardian.

Pawtrekker Dog Scooter

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

This UK based dog scooter company is on to a great way to have eco-friendly fun with your dog and help your dog do what many dogs likes to do the best, work! Dog scooters work best with working dogs like Border Collies, Labs, Huskies, German Shepards but other breeds may go for it just as well with training and the right encouragement.
These scooters have either a front V-Brake or rear hydraulic disc brake. From what I could find on their site, this company only sells to the UK and European market at this time. Goes for around £247.

Treehugger Article on How to Green Your Pet

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

One of the best articles I have read on Green issues related to pets is Treehugger’s How to Green Your Pet, 03. 5.07 (sorry I missed it until now) Definitely a GreenPet must read.

They discuss in depth about the various considerations pet owners should have about the effect your pet has on the planet as well as how the planet is affecting your pet. Like why you shouldn’t let your cat outside on its own, or why adapt from a shelter, why clay cat litter is bad, and don’t give junk food to your pets. Check out this article and be sure to read the comments from readers, often even more informative and interesting than the article itself.
